About Our Mighty Coaches

Our classes host no more than 10 athletes and the intimate class sizes allow for individual attention from our wonderful coaches.

Arturo “Ace” Canada

Owner, Coach

Our head coach and Mighty Crossfit owner Ace hails from Brooklyn, New York. In New York, Ace held down a “normal” 9 to 5 and fitness and training were his hobbies until one fated trip to Hawaii, where he met someone on the plane who told him about Crossfit. While in Hawaii, he tried it out and has been hooked ever since. Upon returning to New York, he got Crossfit certified and turned fitness into his way of life.

In 2010, wanting a change of place, Ace moved to San Diego and in 2012 opened Mighty Crossfit. While he is forever grateful and indebted to his clients that have stuck with him for the long term, he admits that his favorite clients are the first timers in the on ramp classes.

“Nothing beats that enlightenment to fitness and the drastic changes you see in a new crossfitter.”

Thom Anderson

Coach Thom (pronounced “Tom”) first discovered CrossFit in 2011. He was initially skeptical of its effectiveness coming from a conventional globo-gym background, but in early 2012, he gave it a shot and found that it was the missing piece to the monotony that can come with working out and never looked back. In 2013, he trained with an understudy of Olympic Weightlifter Jon North and learned the methodology of Olympic lifting.

Upon returning from deployment in May 2014, Coach Thom found himself under the instruction and guidance of Coach Ace. Within six short months he realized that he wanted to be able to give back to the CrossFit community and share everything that he had learned up to that point. He obtained his Level 1 certification and began coaching at Mighty CrossFit.

On a subsequent deployment, Coach Thom had the opportunity to coach at the newly opened CrossFit Subic Bay in the Philippines. This experience cultivated new knowledge in training people new to CrossFit. Coach Thom thoroughly enjoys coaching, isolating discrepancies and helping athletes correcting those discrepancies, and building confidence in their training. To him, there is nothing more satisfying than helping people overcome obstacles.

Sarah Powers

Sarah was raised in Michigan where she spent most of her time competing in sports: gymnastics, track, cross country, and volleyball. After moving to the Bay Area, she stumbled upon CrossFit in 2010 at a rock climbing gym in Oakland. She began crossfitting as a way to compliment her competitive cycling, where she went on to become an elite cyclocross and mountain bike racer.

Sarah became a certified CrossFit trainer because she loves helping people discover the ways CrossFit can improve physical and mental aspects of their lives. As a coach and fitness manager in San Francisco, she also trained women for the CHP and fire fighter physical abilities test.

She balances her time in the gym with her work as a college English instructor.

Alex Safont

Hailing from Staten Island, New York, Alex has spent the majority of his life involved in physical fitness which dramatically increased once he came to San Diego. He dedicated his early years playing soccer, baseball and eventually, after college, competing in amateur MMA back in New York. Alex is now an active competitor in Crossfit competitions as well as powerlifting competitions. Alex discovered Crossfit while deployed and ever since then he has been hooked!

“To me, it’s not all about breaking records and PR’s daily. It gives me much more pride and joy to see others leave everything on the table and strive for something greater and giving it their all. Having heart is what counts the most.”
